The subject is taken from <i>Iphigenia in Aulis<\/i> by Euripedes and is connected with the Trojan War: the Greek ships had been blocked on the coast of Boeotia by a lack of wind, and the seer Calchas had foreseen that only by sacrificing Iphigenia, the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, would the winds blow again.
