This oil sketch shows confidence in the handling of the paint and sets citations from the past \u2013 from Velasquez for the cupid holding the mirror for Painting to the head of Michelangelo\u2019s David chosen as the emblem for sculpture \u2013 alongside more recent figurative memories like the reference to Ingres in Architecture\u2019s pose with his fist under his chin, inspired by the French master\u2019s unconventional portraits."}
