In the background is a copy of the Self-portrait by Perugino in the Uffizi, which Luigi Mussini had asked Antonio Sasso to make in 1854; the lion’s pelt appears in the Miracle of Saint Crescentius by Mussini in Siena Cathedral, and lutes similar to this one can be seen in works by his young students Amos Cassioli and Cesare Maccari.
