The work was left unfinished because of the artist’s death and was donated by his family to the City of Siena (where it is now in the museum complex of Santa Maria della Scala). The painting brings together the majesty of Roman architecture, the sensuality of female nudes, and the inebriating atmosphere created by flowers and perfumes, linking it with the decadent Symbolist poetics so dear to the D’Annunzian cultural climate of Rome at the time.
