The contest was the culmination of the students’ academic career in which they were expected to demonstrate their capacity for invention, but also the correct use of the theoretical and practical notions they had learned. This oil sketch shows confidence in the handling of the paint and sets citations from the past – from Velasquez for the cupid holding the mirror for Painting to the head of Michelangelo’s David chosen as the emblem for sculpture – alongside more recent figurative memories like the reference to Ingres in Architecture’s pose with his fist under his chin, inspired by the French master’s unconventional portraits.
